Review: Against Me! - Total Clarity

Artist/Album: Against Me! - Total Clarity

Release date: 5/23 (CD / vinyl / digital download)

Label: Fat Wreck Chords

This is the second release in Fat Wreck Chords’ Against Me! demo collections. The first was The Original Cowboy a collection of pre-album versions of the tracks originally presented on The Eternal Cowboy. Total Clarity does the same thing with the tracks found on their later album Searching For A Former Clarity. What makes this release so special though is that Clarity is the album that some Against Me! fans started to give them grief over for drifting too far away from their folk punk roots where they originated. Total Clarity being comprised of rough studio cuts should really excite those fans because the recordings are less polished and hark back to a sound that more closely resembles their Reinventing Axl Rose days. Some tracks like “Unprotected Sex With Multiple Partners” are drastically changed, it ditches the catchy hooks of the original and trades in melodies for a more spastic and throaty delivery, not to mention the track is shorter by over a minute. Other songs, “The Shaker” for example, differs very little from its forerunner aside from some subtle tempo changes. There are a few tracks that didn’t make the official album and are definitely worth a listen if you’re an AM! fan. My recommendation is that if you dig the earlier Against Me! records then picking up this is a no brainer, if you love the rock and roll of later recording then this isn’t a necessity for your collection.

Lyric sample: “All’s quiet, except for this song / So maybe while I’m not together I can feel like I’m not alone.”

For fans of: Red City Radio / The Riot Before / Strike Anywhere

Pick it up here.

Review: Go Rydell - The Golden Age

Artist/Album: Go Rydell - The Golden Age

Release date: Ocotober, 2010 (CD / vinyl / iTunes)

Label: Black Numbers

It may be almost a year after it’s release, but now is the perfect time to check out Go Rydell’s debut full length The Golden Age if you haven’t already. The band has secured slots at this summer’s This is Hardcore and will be playing Fest 10 in October, so chances are that you’ll be seeing them live sometime soon and it’s best to know at least a few lyrics before jumping into the pit. The Golden Age is the result of five guys wanting to bring the melodic ferocity of the music that they grew up on (Kid Dynamite / Lifetime) to kids today. It’s not phony or forced though, their tribute to PA/NJ hardcore is sincere. They are making this music because it meant the world to them when they were younger and want to say thanks by creating a similar feeling within their listeners. Paying it forawrd in a sense. Vocalist, Chris Scaduto, spills his heart on this record, roaring through 10 short bursts of melodic hardcore in just under 15 minutes. The lyrics are heartfelt dealing with the stumblings of any mid-twenties guy trying to find his place in the world, the break downs are well placed, and you’ll be humming the hooks in your sleep. Ever heard of Shook Ones? Yeah, these guys are the more pissed off version of them.

Lyrics sample: “So I make my way back home, have no need for a stereo / I’ll just listen to a full moon tapping along with my shoes”

For fans of: Shook Ones / Grave Maker / Another Breath

Be sure to check out the video of the track “Suck Brick Kid” here.

Review: Living With Lions - Holy Shit

Artist/Album: Living With Lions - Holy Shit!

Release date: 5/17/2011 (CD / vinyl / iTunes)

Label: Adeline Records

Living With Lions’ debut full length Make Your Mark made my top 10 albums of 2009. It was an under appreciated gem overshadowed by the likes of Title Fight’s The Last Thing You Forget, Polar Bear Club’s Chasing Hamburg, and Dear Landlord’s Dream Homes. LWL made sure that wouldn’t happen this time around by making a more mature release that is vocally and lyrically stronger than it’s predecessor. Slapping “Holy Shit” on the cover of a bible and using it for album art, sparking a heated controversy with Canadian politicians and religious fanatics, certainly helped them from being glanced over this time around as well. Oh yeah and did I mention, they replaced their lead vocalist, Matt Postal, with Stu Ross (Lowtalker / Misery Signals)! You didn’t notice? Neither did I, because the subtle shift in vocal delivery feels more like a natural progression than anything else. The leveling of melodies from contrasting wilhelm screams to lulling harmonies to a more evenly keeled  rock vibe is exactly how a sophomore LWL record should sound. Don’t make the same mistake twice and pick up this record!

Lyrics sample: “(That night), The world fell to pieces, (Undone), The seam’s were ripped and useless, (I’m falling), Falling, I’m falling apart from you.”

For fans of: Polar Bear Club / Red City Radio / Make Do and Mend

Be sure to check out the video of the track “Honesty, Honestly” here.

Show Review: Title Fight - Spring Summer Tour 2011

Headline: Title Fight

Opening acts: The Menzingers, Touche Amore, Dead End Path

Date: 5/19 - 8:45PM

Location: The First Unitarian Church - Philadelphia, PA

Last night kicked off the record release tour for Title Fight’s new album, Shed, out on Side One Dummy Records. The tour was made up of a eclectic bunch of punk, hardcore, and melodic cross over bands that while may sound like a mixed bag of fruit is exactly what punk shows should be all about: finding new bands to fall in love with. I think it was best said when Title Fight vocalist, Jamie Rhoden, said, “Don’t pigeonhole yourself into a corner [with the music you listen to]” and it’s those barriers that this tour hopes to break down. Read the full review after the break.

Review: Touche Amore - Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me

Artist/Album: Touche Amore - Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me

Release date: June 7, 2011 on CD, LP, Deluxe LP, and Digital

Label: Deathwish Inc.

Hardcore is a genre that can get stuck in its own momentum and run in place with itself. Every now and then it needs a push to get past the collective of bands responsible for the current sound of hardcore. Recently it’s been bands like Blacklisted and Modern Life Is War, in the past it was acts like American Nightmare and Refused that have ushered in a new sound to emulate. Today it’s Touche Amore; dragging their emotionally drenched lyrics across 21 minutes of lonely music desperate for your attention. If anyone doubted that they couldn’t make another …To The Beat of a Dead Horse they were sorely mistaken, Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me is the definition of a swan song. A truly riveting release.

Lyric sample: “If you’re looking for a place / to hang your head in shame / the light is always on / so come on in”

For fans of: Modern Life Is War / Defeater / Life Long Tragedy

Check out the video for “Home Away From Here” above and then pre-order the Deluxe LP from Deathwish before it’s gone!

Review: Protagonist - States

Artist/Album: Protagonist - States

Release date: 5/10 (CD/Digital download) 5/17 (iTunes)

Label: Paper + Plastick

After signing to Paper + Plastick in 2009, Protagonist went from being young Floridian teenagers writing fast and furious skate-punk to melodic hardcore legends overnight. Their sophomore LP, The Chronicle, was an instant classic full of the most emotionally charged anthems since Ink & Dagger’s Drive This Wooden Stake Through My Philadelphia Heart. They set the bar high for themselves to say the very least. The recently released States EP doesn’t skip a beat, picking up right where The Chronicle left off and taking the band full speed into the right direction. “Turnbridge” may be their best song yet and this may just be their most monumental release.

Lyric sample: “Pennsylvania is a black hole, a burden I carry wherever I go. It’s 15 years and I still feel it, there ain’t no cure for the Chester County blues. Been 15 years and I could feel it, can I ever return to you?”

For fans of: Energy / Much The Same / Strike Anywhere

Review: The Disappeared - Bridges

Artist/Album: The Disappeared - Bridges

CD release: May 31, 2011

Vinyl release: June 21, 2011

Label: I Hate Punk Rock

Taking inspirations from hardcore legends Ignite and Grey Area, The Disappeared harks back to a time where 2-step and roaring vocals were nonexistent. After releasing three EPs from 2007-2009 the band decided to shuffle their lineup a bit and focus on releasing their first full length. The fine tuning resulted in Bridges, the bands most cohesive album to date. Blending elements of both punk and melodic hardcore to solidify their title of best punk outfit in St. Louis.

Lyric sample: “I’ve always had a knack for spotting people that I hate!” -Bridges

For Fans of: Ignite, Comeback Kid, A Wilhelm Scream

To hear the opening track “The City of Neighborhoods” from Bridges see the post below.
