Boxer/Eyes Wide - Split EP (Full Album Stream)

For Fans Of: Title Fight, Turnover, Daylight

Praise:

Boxer and Eyes Wide up the ante with three tracks each and this represents another one of those times, when you go in with no real expectations, only to be blown away by the sheer power of the album. Each band offer something with so much emotional tissue and connectivity in this untitled split, that it’ll surely be on repeat for a little longer than you’d initially anticipate. It has that strong sense of urgency in its musical push. - 4.5/5 from Punknews.org

While Boxer brings a more furious and explosive sound to the table on the first half of the split, Eyes Wide transitions on the next half of this EP with a more tame, yet blissfully-crafted style; citing influence from iconic emo acts like Knapsack, Mineral and Small Brown Bike. - 4/5 from EasyCore.net

Captives - My Eyes Are Open (Full Album Stream)

For Fans Of: Brand New, Balance & Composure, Thrice

Praise:

People on this website love Brand New.
And people on this website love Balance and Composure.
People on this website will love Captives. - AbsolutePunk.net

The band is a trio from Eagle Mountain, Utah and on their EP they take a mellow, introverted bitterness known from later Brand New records and fold it out into louder, grungy, in your face rock moments complete with crunchy guitar and yelled singing that sounds like sandpaper scraped over the vocal cords. - RockFreaks.net

The four believe it their fate to deliver the same brand of heavily emotional, dark music in which they themselves grew up listening to, to their quiet town and awaken its inhabitants. - BringTheNoiseUK.com

This past Fall, Boxer (Richmond, VA) teamed up with Eyes Wide (Hollidaysburg, PA) to record a split EP. Boxer enlisted the help of Will Yip (Title Fight, Balance & Composure) for recording while Eyes Wide collaborated with Vince Ratti (Tigers Jaw, The Wonder Years) and the end result is a mind melting mix of melodic hardcore and 90s alternative rock.

This marks the second release from Boxer after debuting their EP Undertow on Reveille Records in 2012 and the first batch of new material from Eyes Wide since 2011. The album ranges from moody angst ridden jams like Boxer’s “Weight” to the gloomy passion of Eyes Wide’s “Gem.” Each band is showcasing three new songs which represents the current direction that both bands are embarking on.

On May 7th, 2013 the split will be released digitally (iTunes, Spotify, Amazon MP3) and on CD via Reveille Records. You can PRE-ORDER the album here.

This Is Your Life - Before We Fade Away
Melodic Hardcore
Think: Set It Straight, Sinking Ships, The Effort
With this band hailing from Richmond, VA. I instantly thought of DTN which are one of my favourite hardcore bands. While DTN are an awesome straight edge youth crew-esque hardcore band, from the offset it’s clear that This Is Your Life are coming at hardcore from a different angle. The opening track, Before We Fade Away… starts with rainfall, a gentle tap on the cymbals before the guitar led intro comes in. As the rest of the instruments make their way into the track, the rainfall fades away, and you begin to get an idea of what kind of music this band will be producing. Arrivals and Departures is the next track, and opens with the line “Nothing stays the same” screamed by the entire band. Once the vocals start the delivery reminds me of the bands mentioned, and the album quickly starts to work it’s way through the tracks, which work together well to create an album which is completely free of filler and comes in at just under 37 minutes of enjoyable listening.
Suggested track: The standouts for me are Blackout Curtains and Distractions.

Nightlights Summer Tour Journal 2011 - Day 1 and 2 (July 23 + 24)

After signing to Eulogy Records and releasing their debut LP So It Goes on July 5th Nightlights are hopping in the and embarking on their fifth tour. This time they’ll be making a run up the east coast before turning around and hitting the southern circuit. Playing with new bands every night and staying in strange towns with people they’ve met on the road can make from some very entertaining stories. We’ve given Nightlights this forum to share their stories, tales, and exaggerations while on the road.

Read the first installment below and be sure to check back every couple of days for more!

Nightlights Summer Tour Journal 2011

Day 1 and 2 - July 23 and 24

We always meet at Jake’s house (drums) in Port Orange, Florida.  His house has the most sufficient parking and the van stays with him while we are not on tour.  We are all originally from that area but everyone resides in other cities now.  Jake and I (Joe, guitar) are the only ones who still live in the Daytona Beach area.  Actually, after this tour we will all be living in different cities, at least an hour or more apart from each other. Matt now lives in Jacksonville so we usually pick him up on the way out.

Our first stop is in Valdosta, Georgia.  Destination: Bleu Pub. Usually our tours start out horribly due to the fact that we live in the south and that the most southern states don’t really cater to punk rock music as well as it does to say…Christian Metal-core. So we really weren’t looking forward to this show.  We showed up a little late, but were pleasantly surprised to see a great turnout.  A nice and chill bar setting with a stage and what looked like some really delicious southern cooking.  We played third in the line-up and a decent amount of people took interest in us and presented themselves in front of the stage, while some of the other on-lookers sat in the booths.  That usually makes for a semi-awkward experience but overall the show was great and was probably the best first show we have played on our five tours.  We cooped up that night with a friendly couple that we got to talking with at the show.  They even made us breakfast in the morning.  We said our farewells, showed our appreciation for their hospitality and were off to Savannah in the ungodly mid-summer heat.

Half naked and sweating, we were cruising through back woods Georgia, Staying hydrated with our piss warm bottle water that we stocked up on before we left.  As we were driving on an overpass, we noticed a rendezvous of pick-up trucks on what looked liked a beach bordering a delicious creek.  We quickly turned around and headed off road to find the path to this party.  We pulled into a spot and headed to the water, full of good ol’ boys and warm Busch light.  The creek was not as refreshing as it seemed, being that it was shallow and warm, but the iodine colored water was better than the muggy highway wind.

When we arrived in Savannah, we were greeted with some familiar faces of some local Floridian bands, Mute Issue and Break On Through.  As well as our friends band from Houston, Texas, Earhart.  We got there just in time to find out that the show had been cancelled due to some miscommunication.  Every effort to find a new and last minute venue was taken but with no luck.  The other bands decided to post up in a park and jam acoustically to some bystanders.  We walked around downtown Savannah with an old friend as a tour guide.  We hit a few bars and then stumbled upon “Echo Square”.  This is going to be really hard to explain but I will try to sum it up without all the unimportant details.  Basically there is this square tile in this sort of little park about the size of an apartment living room.  When you stand on the middle of the square and talk, you hear this odd spring reverb.  Almost as if your were in a giant tin can.

The only person that can hear it though, is the one who is standing in the middle of the square talking.  No one around the square can hear the effect it has on your voice and no one around the square talking can make that effect be heard to the person standing on the square.  This basically blew our minds as we tried all sorts off different saying, patterns and positions.  After about 20 minutes we headed back to the park to meet up with the rest of the touring bands.  We found a place to crash with a friend of Alex (bass) in Charleston, SC. So we said our goodbyes and headed north.

Artist Spotlight: Signals Midwest

Artist: Signals Midwest

For fans of: Above Them / Living With Lions / Paper Arms

Why you should pay attention to them:

Signals Midwest have been refining their sound since their debut full length Burn The Blueprints released in 2009. It’s really amazing when you can look at a band just a few years after they’ve began working together and see true progress. After adding Jeff Russell on guitar and working more intimately together writing songs, Signals Midwest has been able to evolve from three kids wanting to be the next Lawrence Arms to a melodic gruff-punk lite quartet that is familiar enough to fit in with the likes of the many guttural sounding bands that are popular at the moment, but full bodied enough to stand on their own two legs as something unique and refreshing. The songs on the new full length Latitudes & Longitudes represent what hard work and the desire for something greater can produce.

Check out our Q & A with Signals Midwest below.

Artist Spotlight: The Reveling

The Reveling are a punk-rock band from New York City. Taking influence from some the greats of 90’s punk like NOFX, Social Distortion, Green Day (we’re talking Dookie and everything before it, not that rock opera bullshit), The Reveling are no strangers to the basements and DIY spaces in the underbelly of Bushwick and Brooklyn; they are also not strangers to success, having shared the stage with A Wilhelm Scream, Make Do & Mend and Bridge & Tunnel. With an impressive first EP 3D Radio under their belt and a full length entitled Tributaries produced by Alex Newport (Frank Turner, At The Drive-In, Rival Schools, Samiam), this quartet is more than ready to get you psyched, amped, stoked or any other 90’s slang you’d like to use for being genuinely fucking excited to be at a show hearing some sweet music.

Read a Q & A with the band below.
