Review: BOXER - Undertow EP

Coming straight out of Virginia, Boxer’s debut EP Undertow is now available for download and purchase through Reveille Records. This five-track release takes all of the angst that comes with, well I guess simply put, being alive and turns it into a heart-wrenching, throat tearing journey. These guys brought me back to the days spent on PureVolume searching band after band for anyone who “got it.” The sound is raw but polished; it has that basement feel that serves as a necessary reminder that these guys are authentic.


It is subtleties such as the vocal echo that hits during the EP’s opening track “Anagram” following the line “been digging this grave for twenty years now,” that gives this band distinction from the aforementioned PureVolume discoveries. The vocalist says nothing, just a quiet scream that communicates more than any words could. We travel through the process of growing up throughout the duration of Undertow.

 
Instrumentally this album is exciting, not in the way that there are any ripping solos, but you can feel every note. Aggressive guitars backed by drumming that shouts, “Shit, I broke my sticks again.” My only honest gripe regarding this release sounds something like, “Where the hell was this EP in 2004 when waking up proved the day’s most daunting task?”

 
While it could be easy to get caught up in the self-pity delivered through the lyrics, I feel confident that we will be seeing more of these guys. The closing track, “Medicine Cabinet,” speaks directly to the question of, “Will things get better?” In one of the most honest closing statements, certainly fitting to the overall themes of Undertow, we find the vocalist asking, “Is this body mine?”


I want to be there for the redemption full-length release where we find these guys answering that question. Undertow is streaming on Bandcamp at http://boxerrva.bandcamp.com/album/undertow and the very limited (250) vinyl release is currently available for pre-order through Reveille Records.
