Artist/Album: Restorations - Restorations
Record Label: Tiny Engines
Pressing: 300 on black (180g) / 150 on clear with yellow swirl / 50 clear with black swirl
It’s always exciting to get a package from a PR firm, you know its going to be chock full of free goodies, but a lot of hard work comes along with it. After all they’re expecting you to do some sort of write up for them in return. Sometimes you get lucky though and score a few vinyl releases on top of the mounds of CDs and digital download codes. What’s even better is when one of those records is from a band that you are already a big time fan of, such was my experience when the Restorations’ self-titled12” arrived on my doorstep this morning.
I’ll have a review on the album sometime next week along with an MP3 stream at the bottom of this post, but to give you a real brief summation of what Restorations sounds like imagine a more mellowed out Gaslight Anthem with less emphasis on americana and more on rock and roll.
The album jacket is gatefold and constructed out of heavy grade card stock that allows for the beautiful artwork to be displayed crisply so that the colors pops. When I listen to this record I imagine myself laying out on my roof at night in the summertime staring up at the stars and I think artist Bruno Guerreiro really captures that feeling with the artwork he designed for the album. The dulled swirls of gold encapsulates the slow rock vibe the album thrives on. The record itself is heavy, pressed on 180g vinyl, with contrasting labels (one side gold and brown, the other brown and gold).
Not all records are created equal, some are handled with more love, which is usually indicative of how much adoration a label has for that particular release. It’s clear that Tiny Engines really enjoys this album and expresses that through the vinyl packaging of the album.
